Methodological approach to understanding mathematical problems

Mathematical problem solving is a central activity in the process of teaching and learning mathematics. Many researchers in the area of Educational Mathematics report difficulties in the comprehension phase of the problem. This article addresses this phase and offers a proposal of methodological actions with the aim of guiding students and teachers during this process.
