Abstract

The text presents a fictional scenario in which Mexico faces a health catastrophe caused by the reintroduction of smallpox through used clothing smuggled across the northern border. The narrative describes how tons of infected garments are distributed in popular markets and street markets, reaching millions of people living in poverty. The epidemic spreads rapidly through various cities, with the exception of Mérida, and primarily affects young people and children, as only those over 40 retain immunity from previous vaccination campaigns. The high mortality rate of the new variant of the virus generates social chaos: families disintegrate, children are abandoned, factories and public services grind to a halt, and cities empty out. The story suggests that the crisis may have been part of a U.S. military experiment to test biological weapons and vaccines, recalling similar past experiments in Latin America. In response to the first outbreaks, the United States closes the border and extends its military control into Mexican territory, reinforcing the idea of a covert invasion. The author questions the lack of foresight on the part of Mexican authorities: the suspension of vaccine production, the absence of medical training, and the permissiveness regarding the importation of used clothing. The chronicle concludes with a bleak outlook: Mexico internationally isolated, with its population decimated and at risk of becoming a failed state. The central warning is clear: the lack of prevention and scientific understanding could condemn the nation to repeat historical tragedies.
