Citizens and council members of the coastal regions of Guerrero, Mexico, from the perspective of their political culture

This study examines, through the results of surveys on political culture, the type of political orientation that guides the behavior of citizens and members of municipal councils in the Costa Grande, Acapulco, and Costa Chica regions of Guerrero, Mexico, in their interactions with the post-transition political system. It seeks to identify the potential for these orientations to contribute to democratic governance. The political culture of citizens and council members in the coastal regions of Guerrero, Mexico, is analyzed to evaluate its influence on democratic governance. Three dimensions are studied using surveys: political interest, satisfaction with democracy, and trust in institutions and political actors. The results show that citizens' interest in politics is limited, while council members demonstrate greater involvement. Television is the primary source of information for both groups. Regarding democracy, there is an ambivalent perception: some citizens acknowledge its existence, but many express dissatisfaction or indecision. For their part, council members are viewed more favorably, although they also express criticism. Trust in institutions is uneven: citizens are particularly distrustful of political parties and local authorities, while council members show greater confidence in the various levels of government. Likewise, problems of intolerance and discrimination are detected, as well as weaknesses in public ethics and oversight mechanisms, notably the lack of understanding of their roles by some council members. In conclusion, although conditions exist for strengthening democracy, traditional political practices, institutional distrust, and low citizen participation persist, limiting its consolidation.
