Community census of urban trees and their carbon storage estimation: a citizen science exercise in Guadalupe Victoria, Durango, Mexico

Urban trees play a crucial role in environmental sustainability, contributing to climate change mitigation, air quality improvement, and biodiversity promotion. However, the lack of detailed information on tree species in urban areas complicates the effective management and conservation of these resources. Often, gathering this information requires considerable human resources for field data collection. To address this issue, this research presents a citizen science exercise for urban tree census and the estimation of its ecosystem service of carbon storage, using the city of Guadalupe Victoria, Durango, Mexico, as a case study. The city was sampled by zones, conducting a count of trees and arboreal shrubs in urban green areas and recording their common and scientific names. Subsequently, carbon storage in the tree- covered area was estimated using the i-Tree Canopy software. As a result, a total of 4,503 specimens were surveyed. The most prevalent tree species were huizaches (Vachellia farnesiana), jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia), truenos (Ligustrum lucidum), mezquites (Prosopis juliflora) and species from the Pinaceae family and Casuarina. Carbon storage in the tree-covered area was estimated at 5,678.9 tons of carbon. This exercise is expected to serve as a useful and replicable example for generating information that guides conservation and management actions for urban trees, as well as fostering citizen participation.
