Antiradical activity and encapsulation of plant extracts used in traditional medicine in the state of Guerrero
Keywords:
antiradical activity, ionic gelation, encapsulation, aqueous extracts, plant extractsAbstract
In the State of Guerrero many plants are used due to their medicinal properties, cultural and nutritional value. Currently there is interest in research into medicinal plants that can be used in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. The objective of the work was to evaluate the antiradical activity and encapsulate aqueous extracts obtained from seven plants used in traditional medicine in the State of Guerrero. The aqueous extracts of Justicia spicigera (muicle), Artemisia ludoviciana (estafiate), Kalanchoe daigremontiana (kalanchoe), Coleus hadiensis (vaporub), Eucalyptus globulus (eucalipto), Tecoma stans (nixtamaxuchitl) and Cascabela thevetioides (yoyote) were obtained by the method of infusion. The antiradical activity was determined by the DPPH• method. The encapsulates were obtained through the ionic gelation technique using sodium alginate. The extracts that presented the highest DPPH• radical scavenging activity were K. daigremontiana (kalanchoe), E. globulus (vaporud), T. stans (nixtamaxuchitl) and C. thevetioides (yoyote) (p ˂0.001). Encapsulated with irregular spherical shapes and average sizes of 4.19-
5.02 mm were obtained. The encapsulated aqueous extracts of the plants K. daigremontiana (kalanchoe), E. globulus (vaporud), T. stans (nixtamaxuchitl) and C. thevetioides (yoyote) represent a new alternative for obtaining antioxidant, healthy and innovative natural products that could be used in the future in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries.
